Last time I went to Liverpool Street it was a [Sea] of National Express, I found listening out for announcements very difficult as there wer none that I could ignore. Can the Next Incumbent PLEASE break this [Sea] up into sensible geographic Area. Before that made this Single Franchise it was pleasent as, West (Cambridge, Hertford, Stansted) was WAGN, Long Distance (Peterborough, Norwich) was Anglia and the rest (Southend, Ipswich Semi Fast, Harwich and Braintree) was Great Eastern

Many Thanks

Originally titled " How to go Railway Modelling", this book has everything the budding Railway Modeller could possibly need to commence their chosen hobby. The book covers all aspects of the hobby, from the initial choice of gauge/scale against Available Space, and the necessary materials required; to the ultimate choice of Railway practise and signalling procedures ! All major electrical "problems" are highlighted, and there are several track plans shown to excite the reader into planning their own. A brief history of the hobby is present, as well as up-to-date reviews of all the various rolling stock currently available in the various gauges. The book also covers such topics as baseboard and scenery construction; terminus vs continuous loop layouts; outdoor railways; rolling stock and acceptable accessories. All areas are accompanied by photographs of some superb layouts, with some excellent close-ups for illustration purposes. Really this is an inspirational must for all Model Railway enthusiasts, whether for the complete beginner, or for the "semi-pro" who needs some new ideas !

I feel the book is directed at those who are considering a model railway. You need to sit down and digest the information gradually, if you do this it will actually help you to make the various decisions neccessary in how to go about it. I was in this position and was helped immensly. Its disadvantage is that should you decide to choose a scale other than 00 then it doesn't help you so much.
There are lots of interesting facts contained within the pages and some nice photographs to inspire you. If you buy the book, read a couple of chapters and then visit a model railway exibition.

The Three Railway Engines was my first ever book and now at the age of 35 I read it regularly to my daughter who is nearly two.
Our copy is a 1960's hardback, which features additional illustrations by me, aged about six. Despite this vandalism I have always cherished the stories, particularly the one where Henry goes into a tunnel and won't come out.
There used to be a record of the book, read by Johnny Morris of Animal Magic fame. Reading the book again to my daughter I can still hear Johnny's voice.
I would recommend this book to any parent who remembers the stories from when they were young. The only thing I can't get my head around is the popularity of Thomas. I had (and still have) seven of the books and he is just one of the engines. Each character has their own individual traits, in this particular book you have Henry whose vanity gets the better of him, Gordon who is the pride of the line and Edward who is a friend to everyone.
For those who follow the stories ,note that at this stage in the series none of the engines had numbers. Also there are three other unnamed engines in the shed and Henry gets painted blue at the end of the book to match Edward and Gordon.
Worth reading again and again, no matter what age you are!

Sorry, what's Phillipa Reece on about? Her comments are confounded with some modern TV-inspired title. This is the Original, No. 1 of the Railway Series by the Rev W Awdry. We are introduced to Edward, Gordon and Henry in that order, but NOT Thomas! He had to wait until book no. 2!
