For newer releases, I’ve never found any place that sells the newer movies for a cheap price unless it’s bootleg. As for older movies there are plenty of options. Walmart has a whole bin of movies that are $5 each. They are older movies but there are some really good buys in there. Best Buy and Circuit City always have some kind of sale on DVD’s going on and there some that go as cheap as $4.99. If you go on Amazon.com there are some independent dealers who sell DVD’s for cheap prices but you still have to pay for shipping which is usually around $2.99. ebay also has some DVD’s for cheaper prices but it’s a crap shoot as to whether you get what you bid on and if the DVD is actually playable. The good thing about ebay though is most of the dealers who sell DVD’s are really accommodating and will do what they can to satisfy you, but again you still have to pay shipping on most of them and it takes time for everything to happen. One of the best things to do is buy used DVD’s. I didn’t want to at first, but it’s a lot cheaper than brand new and most stores have a very good return policy for them. Blockbuster usually has good prices for their used DVD’s and I usually buy from them. I believe any place that rents out DVD’s will sell their used DVD’s for a reasonable price. Game stop also sells used DVD’s at a good price and usually have deals going on. Amazon.com and ebay both have used DVD’s for sale but you still have to pay for shipping. Hope this helps you out.

From the research I did a while back, it’s typically not cheaper to travel that far by train or bus, especially if you want the trip to be comfortable. It also takes alot longer than flying a plane, which could also increase your chances of spending more on food, etc. On the other hand, plane tickets are not at their lowest prices right now, so I’d be sure to check out a comparison site like sidestep.com to get the best deal. If you can be flexible on the exact time you arrive/depart, and can handle the possible extra hassle of multiple connections, you can usually get significant discounts from Priceline.com.

Train travel is very limited in Tennessee. Check with Amtrak to see if it goes from your city to where you want to go and the age of a minor. For an answer on the cost, we need to know things like where you are coming from and going to, when you are traveling, how far in advance you are buying your ticket, etc. I suggest you call a travel agent in your city and ask them these questions. Don’t count on it. Until the federal government imposes restrictions and controls on the oil speculators that artificially raise the price of oil, the gas prices won’t go down. And even if we were to pull out of Iraq today, that wouldn’t solve much – since its the output of the OPEC nations, the demands of the world market, and current events (especially the threat of a war with Iran) that give the speculators the excuse to keep oil futures high.

Politicians would like to convince us that drilling for oil in the waters off Florida and California (and ANWR in Alaska) would help us lower gas prices, but drilling takes research, then the actual construction work, before the wells even begin outputting oil. Therefore we are at least three to four years away from feeling the beneficial effects even if oil drilling began today.

Gas prices only prove that we need to find alternative fuels to use for cars until our society is ready to wean itself off completely – to solar and hydrogen power. We could use oil shale (which is difficult to produce gas) since Wyoming has the world’s largest reserves, or we could start using the new oil shale deposits found in North Dakota, which are also quite sizeable. We could use cleaner burning coal-to-gas processes that would definitely benefit the economies in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, but the process that creates useable gas there releases dangerous carbon fumes that could speed up greenhouse warming. If we could find a safe way to store the methane in underground containers then this process would be our best bet.

But Europe has had high gas prices hovering from $8 to $12 a gallon, and I think unless the government mans up and wants to crack down on speculators (which lobbyists oppose and the Bush administration opposes – due to the financial benefit that high gas prices give them) the gas prices will not go down. In fact, get used to it – they are likely to go up and reach at least $6 a gallon within a year or two here.

It is a choice between the speed of the train and the cheapness of the coach. There are no other fare reductions as you already hold student railcards. But a couple of other factors for you to consider.

With the tram works in Edinburgh, the western approaches to the city are restricted which adds to the peak problems for the coach in both directions.

The M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh suffers from fogs in autumn and early spring, as well cold snaps in winter. These weather conditions will slow down traffic and can be the catalyst for accidents. (Only a fortnight ago, an accident on the M8 near Kirk o’Shotts brought traffic chaos which led to two football matches being cancelled because teams and supporters were caught up in the melee!)

The only other thought is to put a notice on a students noticeboard seeking a car sharing arrangement. Even if only part way (such as Bathgate to Glasgow), it could save quite a bit.

Shin-Osaka to Fukuoka (Hakata station) is another three hours.

So with a tight plan you can travel around the south if you fly into and out of Tokyo. Why don’t you fly directly to Osaka?

For Fuji you can stay in Kawaguchiko but I wouldn’t bother. I’d hurry to the south.

The best thing to do is go to some of the hotel booking websites, such as hotwire.com, tripadvisor.com, booking.com, hotels.com, kayak.com and etc. Then put your trip info into the website booking form. Some of the booking sites have an option which will let you see how far your hotel is from a landmark of your choice, such as Grant Park, the location of Lollapalooza. Then click the button to search for available hotels and the rates….you can sort the results by price. You are probably going to need a credit card to make a reservation and you are going to need to make a reservation ASAP because the hotels sellout on some weekends. The closest hotels to Lollapalooza are: Best Western Grant Park, Essex Inn, Harrison/Travelodge hotel, Hilton Chicago, Congress Plaza hotel, Blake hotel, Palmer House hotel and a few others. Well it does make it a tad easier if you have a starting destination but you can get there on those dates from Boston for 761, From Los Angeles it is 894,from Chicago it is 862 and from JFK in New York it is 737. I know this isn’t below 500 but airfare is sorta hight right now. One of the best sites to find fares is www.kayak.com. Someone above mentioned thetrainline.com, and that’s one of the big sites for train travel, so it’s definitely worth looking at. I know a couple of people who also regularly use raileasy – http://www.raileasy.co.uk/ – and they say it’s normally cheaper than thetrainline. So you might want to have a look at that too.

Tickets will be sent to any address you specify, but if you book within approximately 48 hours of departure (as you say you may have to do), then the sites will only allow you to collect your tickets at the station.

And, as someone else has said, the earlier in advance you can book your ticket, the better your chances of getting a cheaper ticket.

Theres been a change to the way tickets are sold.
Its supposed to be a simpler fare structure but means there are only 3 types of ticket available now.

I guess that the anytime ticket is for the old “walk on” fares and you should be looking at “advanced ” type tickets for the cheapest fare.

If you do it on-line you can specify which station you want to pick the tickets up from via one of the ticket issuing machines. The person will need your order code to collect the tickets but there is no reason why you can’t do it.

You do need the booking reference. If you have an account on the raileasy website, you should be able to log in and see all your bookings. If not, phone their customer services department.

By the way, I very strongly recommend you DO NOT use Raileasy in future. They charge you extra for payments by debit or credit card, whereas train company websites (such as the East Coast or Southern Railway websites) have the exact same ticket prices and do not charge card fees at all.

I think these rip off, fee charging companies like thetrainline and Raileasy should be banned, in my opinion. (And don’t get me started on Ryan Air!)

Unfortunately Amtrak has made Chicago their “hub” city for the midwest. Trains from the west and south start or end there. Trains heading to more eastern points, including Ann Arbor, also start or end there. That means there is no train that would take you from, say southern Illinois to Michigan–their routes aren’t laid out that way. You first have to take a train to Chicago and then transfer to a train to Michigan.

It’s similar to what many airlines do, particularly if they are going between smaller cities. You get on one plane and take it to their airline hub airport, and then change to a plane that’s going to your destination city.

The only website that can help you is Amtrak‘s. Use their trip planner but don’t be surprised if it tells you that you have to change trains in Chicago.
