In response to the Chancellor’s announcement, Michael Roberts, Chief Executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said:

“It is excellent news that the Government has underlined its commitment to improving the railways, including the electrification of key parts of the network.

“Running more electric trains is good news for passengers, the environment and the economy. The work will cut carbon emissions and journey times, reduce overcrowding and add capacity on busy parts of the network.

“We need to continue to plan ahead for the longer term if we are to ensure that a significant majority of passengers reap the benefits of faster, greener and quieter electric trains. Over the next 30 years, the demand for rail is likely to double and we must continue to improve our existing network if we are to keep up with this growth in passenger numbers.”
