has anyone bought/used a rail pass in thailand?

help asked:

thai rail pass seems substantially cheaper, -somewhat suspiciously cheaper… is it a good choice for overnight trips? anyone ever used it for long trips (bangkok to chiang mai, surat thani to bangkok, etc…) if so, hows the sleeper car accomodation? would you recommend just buying individual tickets for 1st class? any warnings, suggestions, experiences? thanks..

Just wing it because your plans will likely change one you get there.

Don’t take the train, take the bus.

Train ticket is so cheap since the Thai gov is trying to encourage people to use the train. People however use coach for travelling since it is faster and more secure when travelling in the night time.

I used train in Thailand only once in my life for a short trip (4 hrs) and I quite enjoyed fresh air and the views. You can even enjoy seeing local Thai people getting stuffs to the market in their ways which is funny. In addition, trains normally run across places in which you will never seen if you take a coach or car.

If you are going to take a train in daytime and you don’t mind being there for several hours (the seats are not so comfortable) you can have a great experience with train. Otherwise, you should take a coach or an airplane.

I prefer the sleeper car trains over buses. I can’t sleep sitting up so buses and planes are a nightmare at night. The sleeper car beds are actually more comfortable then most hotel beds in Thailand. I really enjoy the train. If I get sick of my bed, I can just get up and go have a drink and enjoy the fresh air. Keep any high value items inside your bed area.
