National Rail > If I buy a train ticket today with a return for tomorrow can i still come back today?

Basically I’m planning to take a train from London to Dovercourt next friday and my friend said to book the return for the saturday, cause knowing me and him, I wouldn’t want to leave haha :)

So if I did book the return for the saturday could I still go home on friday?

My friend said I could because basically it means that the ticket is valid till saturday, you don’t have to leave on saturday.

So I just wanted to double check :)

Thanks everyone xx

if you buy your ticket at the station just ask them to be certain but I think you will find that unless you book your ticket to come back on the saturday it wont be valid after the last train on friday

Unless you are booking a ticket on a specific train (an advance ticket), an open return is valid for a month after the date of outward travel. (so travelling back the same day or the next day will be fine). If you know you are coming back the same day, you can buy a day return. This is generally cheaper, but is only valid on the day of outward travel.

Well this late on you probably wont be able to get advance single tickets, so get an open return – it’s only a few pounds more than a day return anyway.
