First Hull Trains Re-launches Club 55

The Mayor of East Grinstead, Cllr John Saull today joined Network Rail, Southern, East Grinstead Town Councillors and other members of the local community at East Grinstead Railway station to mark the start of a major upgrade of the station which will allow longer trains run and improve the overall travelling experience for passengers.

The first phase of the work is to upgrade the tracks and extend the platforms so they can handle12-car trains, rather than the current eight-car, providing more seats for thousands of passengers who travel on the busy route between East Grinstead and Victoria every day.

Phase two, which is being funded through the national stations improvement programme, focuses on improving facilities and the overall station environment. The work includes:

– Construction of a new station building which has an improved layout making it easier for passengers to move through the station, particularly at the busiest times of the day
– Creation of a brighter and more spacious booking hall area, which includes a fully accessible ticket office window, improved retail and new passenger toilets
– Improved passenger drop off and taxi arrangements
– Installation of new automatic ticket gates and improved CCTV coverage
– Installation of new platform waiting shelters
– Enhanced cycle parking facilities

Cllr John Saull said: “Both the new station, and the Bluebell Railway northern extension which is coming next year, will certainly smarten up this quarter of the town and increase business opportunities.”

Mark Ruddy, Network Rail’s route director for Sussex, said: “This upgrade is a big step forward in providing a bigger and better railway for the people of East Grinstead. Once completed, there will be more seats on trains and better station facilities, which will significantly make a real and long-lasting difference to the daily journeys for thousands of passengers.”

David Scorey, Southern’s franchise improvement director said: “Once this programme of work is complete, we will be in a much better position to be able to increase seating capacity significantly into central London on the East Grinstead Line starting from December 2011, and our passengers will also benefit greatly from the new station building. The work has been planned in a way which will keep disruption to a minimum which is great news for our passengers.”

The platform extensions and track upgrades, which are being delivered by Network Rail, are scheduled for completion by 11 December 2011 so the longer trains can start running in the new timetable.

The improvements to station facilities, which are being delivered by Southern, begin in September and are due for completion in summer 2012.

More seats and a better station for East Grinstead passengers

Minister of State for Transport, Theresa Villiers, officially launched First Great Western’s fleet of refreshed Thames Valley turbo services this Tuesday (29 March) at Paddington Station.

Theresa was joined by MP’s Richard Benson (Newbury), Alok Sharma (Reading West), Robert Wilson (Reading East) and Fiona Mactaggart (Slough).

Originally budgeted at £2 million, First Great Western invested £8.3 million in works to improve the comfort and cleanliness of the trains, including new flooring and seat coverings, as well as improving heating and air conditioning.

A new Passenger Information System, using GPS signals for greater accuracy, has also been installed.  The train company wholly financed the work.

It will take another 18 months to complete all the trains, however refreshed units are entering service across London Thames Valley every two weeks.

Rail Minister Theresa Villiers said: “The Government is investing in a range of projects that will benefit passengers on the Great Western Main Line – we are electrifying the line to Cardiff, providing a fleet of new intercity express trains and funding the transformation of Reading station. On top of that we are investing in increasing capacity on the wider rail network by introducing 2,100 new carriages by 2019.

“I am delighted First Great Western are contributing to these wider improvements by carrying out this refurbishment work on their trains.”

First Great Western Managing Director Mark Hopwood said:

“The work began on the units last year and the trains have been well received by our customers.  This is part of our on going plans to improve our customers’ rail journeys and comes at a time when performance is improving and when stations throughout the London Thames Valley are being fitted with brand new customer information systems.”

First Great Western launch fleet of refreshed trains

An average speed camera system, the first of its kind in the UK, will begin operating between Canning Town and the Goresbrook Interchange on the A13 from 31 January to help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on this stretch of road, notorious for collisions.

In agreement with the Metropolitan Police and local borough councils, Transport for London (TfL) is introducing the new system at this site as it sees a higher amount of collisions than is usual for London’s roads.

Between 2007 and 2009, there were 426 collisions on this stretch, resulting in two deaths and 37 serious casualties.

More than 70 per cent of those collisions involved cars or goods vehicles and it is hoped the introduction of these new speed cameras will reduce collisions by around 30 per cent.

The new camera system will replace the existing fixed and mobile safety cameras along the stretch of road.

As well as reducing the number of people killed or harmed on the road, it is also hoped this system will reduce congestion caused by collisions, helping to further smooth traffic flow.

Road collisions are responsible for around 28 per cent of congestion in London.

Studies by TfL show that collisions along the stretch of A13 from Canning Town flyover to Goresbrook Interchange can take up to seven hours to be cleared, with the average time being around two hours per collision.

A total of 84 cameras, based at 37 locations, will monitor the speed of vehicles as they drive along part or all of the Canning Town to Goresbrook Interchange section of the A13.

Taking safety seriously

If the average speed for a vehicle along the stretch of the road they drive along is above the speed limit, the owner of the car will be issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) by the Metropolitan Police.

In preparation for the system going live on 31 January, the speed limit will be raised from 40mph to 50mph on the section of the A13 to the east of the Canning Town Flyover and the Goresbrook Interchange in the London boroughs of Newham and Barking & Dagenham.

The increase in speed limit follows a review of the dual three lane design of the A13, which showed that a 50mph speed limit is appropriate for this stretch of road.

The speed limit across the Lodge Avenue and Canning Town Flyovers will remain as they currently are.

David Brown, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: ‘Road safety in the Capital is something that the Mayor and TfL take extremely seriously and this new average speed camera system along the A13 is not only a first for London, but a first for the UK.

‘Once active, the upgraded safety camera system will help significantly reduce the number of collisions that occur along this stretch of road, resulting in fewer serious casualties and reduced collision-related traffic congestion in the local area.’

PC Simon Wickenden of Chadwell Heath Traffic Management Unit, said: ‘We fully support both the increase in the speed limit and the average speed camera system on the A13.

‘Experience elsewhere has shown that average speed cameras increase road safety and at the same time better regulate traffic flow.

‘We believe the speed limit is more appropriate for a dual carriageway like this and the potential reduction in collisions would mean fewer lengthy road closures as the necessary investigations take place.’

EAST COAST’S MINIATURE PRICES ARE BACK – WITH EVEN BIGGER SAVINGS!

Transport for London (TfL) has today published its Festive Travel Guide to help Londoners and visitors travelling around the Capital between Christmas and New Year.

Those travelling in and around the city over the festive period are urged to check the guide before they travel as there will be some changes to normal services.

The guide contains details of Tube, bus, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), tram, London Overground and Riverboat services as well as the Congestion Charge throughout the entire festive period from Friday 24 December 2010, to Bank Holiday Monday 3 January 2011.

The guide is available at all Tube stations, online and at most information points at bus, DLR, tram and London Overground stations.

Travel will be free on all journeys between 23:45 on New Year’s Eve and 04:30 on New Year’s Day on Tube, bus, tram and DLR services.

London Overground services will also be free from 23:45 until the last train.

Barclays Cycle Hire members and casual users will be able to hire bikes as normal through the festive period, although some docking stations will be temporarily unavailable for use on New Year’s Eve for safety reasons.

Essential Tube and Overground engineering works will be taking place over the festive period, TfL is advising all passengers to check before they travel.

Christmas Eve

On Christmas Eve, a Saturday service will operate on the Underground until 19:00, then a reduced service for the rest of the evening.

Last trains will run at Sunday times.

A Saturday service will operate on the bus network with some exceptions.

There will be no night buses and on 24-hour routes, buses will operate until just after midnight.

On the DLR, a normal Monday to Friday service will operate until 19:00 after which a reduced service will operate with last trains at Sunday times.

On the Overground, buses will replace trains between Gospel Oak and Stratford due to major engineering upgrade works.

A Monday to Friday service will operate on other Overground routes with last trains departing from 20:00.

On Tramlink, a Saturday service will operate.

Riverboat services will be running a reduced timetable.

Many coach operators will reduce services from early evening, with last departures from Victoria Coach station at around 21:00.
Christmas Day

On Christmas Day there will be no Tube, bus, DLR, London Overground, tram or river services.
Boxing Day

On Boxing Day from 08:30, a Sunday service will operate on the Tube, buses and trams.

A reduced service will run on the DLR from 08:30 with trains every 15 to 30 minutes.

There will be no service on the Overground.

There will be no Riverboat services except for the Westminster – London Eye – Tower – Greenwich service which will run as normal.

London Underground (LU) hopes to run a Sunday service on Boxing Day.

The leadership of the ASLEF union have announced that they are directing their members to strike on that day, and LU is calling on them to drop their threat.

Passengers are advised to check before they travel.
New Year’s Eve

Revellers planning to see in the New Year in central London are advised to plan ahead to take full advantage of free travel on public transport and in particular be prepared for large crowds, and long waits for the designated viewing areas for the fireworks display.

Peter Hendy, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: ‘The New Year’s Eve fireworks display that takes place at the London Eye provides spectacular entertainment and is enormously popular, attracting large crowds that should be prepared for a long wait at the designated viewing areas along the Thames.

‘As a result people with young children may wish to consider celebrating nearer to home.’

‘For those wishing to brave the crowds and long waiting times, public transport will be the best way to get around the Capital on New Year’s Eve, and I’m pleased we can offer this for free, but I urge revellers to plan their journeys well in advance.’

There will be free travel on all journeys between 23:45 until 04:30 on the Tube, DLR, buses and trams.

Tube, DLR and tram services will run all night on New Year’s Eve.

Some selected Tube stations will be closed completely or for periods at a time, the Festive Travel Guide lists these closures.

A Saturday night service will operate on night buses and 24-hour routes, subject to road closures in central London.

More than 50 extra routes will be operating through the night to enhance the service.

Free travel will apply on London Overground trains running after 23:45 until normal last train times between Watford Junction and Euston, and Dalston Junction and West Croydon/Crystal Palace/New Cross route, but services will not run all night.

London River Services will run a normal service however after 14:30, London Eye Millenium pier will not be served due to preparation for the fireworks display.

Some routes will operate on New Year’s Day, but a normal service will not resume until Sunday 2 January.

Some Barclays Cycle Hire docking stations will be temporarily suspended for safety reasons at various times on New Year’s Eve.

For the latest information on docking station availability, users should check online.

There will be a reduced number of UK coaches departing from Victoria Coach Station with the last coaches leaving at around 20:00.

National Rail will operate modified timetables with additional departures between midnight and 02:45.

Normal rail fares will apply.

London Overground

London Overground passengers should be aware that the Gospel Oak to Stratford route will be suspended from 20:00 on 18 December until 27 December 2010 to allow upgrade work to be undertaken.

The network’s Richmond to Stratford route and Shepherd’s Bush to Willesden Junction route will also be suspended from 27 December until 3 January 2011, to allow further upgrade work to be undertaken.
Congestion Charge

From Saturday 25 December until Monday 3 January inclusive, the central London Congestion Charge will be suspended and motorists will not have to pay.

From Tuesday 4 January 2011 the western extension of the charging zone will no longer be in operation, more information can be found online.

From 4 January 2011 the daily charge for driving within the Congestion Charging zone will increase from £8 to £10, however motorists who have a Congestion Charge Auto Pay account will be eligible for a reduced daily charge of £9.

Motorists can pre-register now for a CC Auto Pay account with a credit or debit card and will have to pay a £10 registration charge for each vehicle on the account.

Once an account has been set up drivers will only be charged for the days they travel within the zone and charges will be automatically deducted from their debit or credit card.
Dial-a-Ride

Dial-a-Ride will be operating every day over Christmas and New Year and all members have been sent details of how to book journeys over this period.

TfL publishes annual Festive Travel Guide and confirms free travel for New Year revellers

Train operator East Coast has introduced new software to its website to help reduce the company’s impact on the environment by providing passengers with personalised timetables.

The new ‘My Timetables’ functionality on www.eastcoast.co.uk allows passengers to pick and choose up to three separate departure or arrival stations and select the days, dates and travel times for their journey, as well as including connecting services from intermediate stations, or services from a particular train operator.

‘My Timetables’ enables passengers to create, download, and save a timetable to their PC or print a pdf version for their chosen journey. East Coast is encouraging its passengers to use the new function to help the company reduce the number of different versions of the printed timetables it produces.

East Coast Commercial Director Peter Williams said: “East Coast is committed to reducing its impact on the environment, and the introduction of the ‘My Timetables’ functionality on www.eastcoast.co.uk , will help East Coast to achieve a reduction in the number of printed timetables we produce and so reduce the need for raw materials used in their production.

“East Coast currently produces its main timetable booklet as well as 22 different variations of a smaller A7 sized timetable, both of which equates to nearly two million timetables produced each year. We will continue to produce the main timetable booklet twice per year, which will continue to be available from station Travel Centres, but we will stop producing the smaller A7 booklets from December.

“By enhancing the timetable information provided on our website, it will improve the overall journey experience for our passengers and encourage them to go online and create their very own personalised timetable, which in turn will help the production of East Coast timetables become more sustainable.”

Timetable information is available 12 weeks in advance so passengers can personalise their timetables to plan future journeys. This will include details of any planned changes to the timetable, including any planned engineering work.

As well as introducing My Timetables to www.eastcoast.co.uk and continuing to produce its main timetable booklet, timetables, they will also continue to be available to download via mobile phones and electric smart columns at stations on the East Coast route.

EAST COAST TIMETABLES TAILOR-MADE TO SUIT YOUR JOURNEY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

London Underground (LU) has now returned to a normal service today following the strike called by the leaderships of the RMT and TSSA unions.

Despite the strike up to 40 per cent of Tube services continued to run across the Capital during Monday’s strike.

Trains ran on ten of eleven lines, more services and stations were operated than during the last strike and most stations in central London remained open.

All key transport hubs operated including Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Victoria, Euston, Stratford, Waterloo, Holborn, Heathrow, Kings Cross, Finsbury Park, Paddington, Earl’s Court and Whitechapel.

More than 100 extra bus services were provided, along with capacity for an additional 10,000 journeys on river services and marshalled taxi ranks.

The number travelling by Barclays Cycle Hire bike increased by around 25 per cent.

Volunteers were provided at bus, Tube, and rail stations to help passengers and distribute walking maps and other useful information.

Mike Brown, Managing Director of LU said: ‘Despite the ‘paralysis’ predicted by the RMT and TSSA leaderships London kept moving.

Most stations in central London remained open and trains ran on ten of the eleven Tube lines, with up to 40 per cent of services running.

‘Londoners showed real resilience and patience, and I would like to thank them as well as the staff who kept services going, and the staff on other parts of the transport network who helped get people around the city.

‘This was a wasted exercise by the RMT and TSSA leaderships.

‘They achieved nothing but losing their members a day’s pay and losing the goodwill of the travelling public.

‘We remain ready for constructive talks, and we are urging the two unions to return to work with us to resolve the issues without further disruption.’

Services return to normal on London Underground

The Mayor and Transport for London have today detailed the efforts being made to help people get around the Capital and keep London moving during the strike on London Underground (LU) on 3/4 October, called by the leadership of the RMT and TSSA unions.

The announcement comes as figures from Transport for London (TfL) show that ninety-three per cent of Oyster customers made their journeys by public transport despite last month’s strike. The union leaderships had predicted the “paralysis” of London, but in the event LU was able to operate over a third of its normal services, and carry over a million people.

Over a hundred extra buses, capacity for over 10,000 more journeys on the river, and marshalled taxi ranks have been organised. Planned roadworks are being delayed or curtailed where possible, and TfL will be working to keep road traffic flowing around key transport hubs. Volunteers will once again be positioned at Tube, bus, and rail stations to assist Londoners with their journeys and provide maps and other useful information.

Londoners who own a bike are encouraged to cycle to work. Cycle parking facilities are being made easier for newcomers to access, and a Cycling Journey Planner will be available on TfL’s website. The Barclays Cycle Hire scheme – which saw record usage during the last strike – will be available to members, and TfL’s contractors will be working to ensure that bikes are redistributed as effectively as possible. Normal services are also expected to run on London Overground, DLR, and Tramlink.

Despite ongoing talks the unions currently intend to proceed with the strike. They are threatening to disrupt Londoners despite being given assurances that staffing changes proposed by London Underground will mean no compulsory redundancies and no loss of earnings, that every station that currently has a ticket office will continue to have one, and that stations will remain staffed at all times. The Union leaderships have been urged to reconsider their action and call off the strike.

Should the strike go ahead, London Underground will work to operate as many services as possible, but passengers are advised that significant disruption is possible and that alternative travel options and staggering journey times should be considered where possible.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “As we saw in the last strike, the belligerent actions of the Union leaderships will not bring London to a halt. They may disrupt Londoners, but they will not stop us from getting around our city. We will keep London moving.

“We are expending every effort to give people alternative ways of getting around – boosting river and bus services, holding back road works and encouraging people to cycle.

“This strike is pointless, and I hope that this time – when Londoners beat the strike once again – the RMT and TSSA leaderships will see sense and return to talks to avert further disruption.”

Currently, RMT and TSSA Tube staff, including station staff and some drivers will begin their 24-hour strike at 18:29 on Sunday 3 October, and maintenance and engineering staff will start at 19:00. Tube services will not return to normal until the start of services on Tuesday morning, 5 October.

Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy said: “There is no need for this strike at all, and we continue to make every effort to avoid a dispute. Despite the RMT and TSSA leaderships saying this is about safety, they have failed to raise a single safety-related point with London Underground in hour upon hour of talks, and have not responded to our request that they set out their specific safety concerns.

“The changes we are making are essential – due to the success of Oyster just one journey in twenty now involves a ticket office, and some ticket offices sell fewer than ten tickets an hour. We have explained that the changes come with no compulsory redundancies and no loss of earnings, and mean that stations will remain staffed at all times and every station with a ticket office will continue to have one. Still the union leaderships are intent on disrupting Londoners.

“Journeys will be more difficult, and we regret that, but they will not stop London from moving. Ninety three per cent of our customers beat the strike using public transport last time, and we will be boosting services to allow them to do so again.”

Those public transport workers who are on duty during the strike will be doing their very best to keep London moving and passengers’ patience is asked for over what may be difficult journeys. The following services are being provided:

Tube

• Disruption is likely to most journeys, but London Underground will run as many trains and keep as many stations open as possible – please check www.tfl.gov.uk for the latest situation on your line and at your station before you travel.
• Volunteers will be on hand at key stations to give alternative travel options and otherwise assist passengers

Buses

• London buses operate around 700 routes and services are being boosted with over a hundred extra buses on key routes
• Extra staff are being deployed to hubs and focus on customer service and information

DLR and London Overground

• A normal service will operate. Some stations where there is an interchange with London Underground may be affected

Tramlink

• Tramlink services are expected to operate as normal

Cycling

• The Barclays Cycle Hire scheme will be available to members, although demand is likely to be high, and cycles harder to access, during peak times.
• Londoners who own a bike are encouraged to cycle to work, and a Cycle Journey Planner is provided on www.tfl.gov.uk
• TfL is writing to hundreds of businesses across London to ask them to be flexible and make it easy for staff to cycle to work, and to allow staff to wear casual clothes on the day
• Cycle Parks at Finsbury Park and London Bridge will be making it easy for new users to turn up, register, and leave their bikes.

River Services

• TfL is operating a special chartered service every 10-15 minutes in the morning and afternoon peaks, with boats operating between Westminster Pier, London Eye Pier and Tower Pier.
• Ticket prices (single tickets only): Adult £3, Concessionary (including Travelcard holders) £1.50. Cash only.
• Thames Clippers will be running their normal services at reduced prices: Adult tickets £5, Travelcard holders £3.50. They will also be operating additional peak hour shuttles on the busy routes to Canary Wharf, priced at £7 return.
• Thames River Taxi will have extra capacity in the morning and afternoon peaks on their Putney Pier to Blackfriars Pier commuter service. Tickets from £3 (Putney to Chelsea Adult single, with a Travelcard). Payment cannot be made with an Oyster card.

Taxis

• Between 06:30 and 10:30 on Monday 4 October 2010 taxi drivers will be operating a marshalled taxi service for central London destinations at five major London rail termini – Waterloo, Liverpool St, King’s Cross, Charing Cross, and Marylebone. In addition, the fixed-fare taxi sharing schemes at Euston Station and Paddington Station are expected to operate as normal
• Private hire and minicab services will be running as normal. Details for licensed private hire and minicab operators in London are available on the TfL website

National Rail

• Oyster Pay As You Go is accepted for all National Rail journeys within Greater London
• Travelcards are also valid for travel on National Rail within the zones purchased

Walking

• Walking maps will be provided online, in bus, rail, and Tube stations in Zone 1 and other key outer London stations, with volunteers helping people plan their routes around the city. People are urged to, where possible, use walking for short journeys

Roads and the Congestion Charge

• To help keep traffic flowing, the Congestion Charge will remain in operation throughout the strike
• TfL will be delaying or curtailing road works on major London roads wherever possible and has encouraged all London boroughs to take similar measures on their network. TfL will also work with the Metropolitan Police to minimise the impact of congestion
• TfL will be working to keep traffic flowing around major transport hubs.
• Londoners and commuters are encouraged to keep journeys by car to a minimum to enable public transport to move freely.
