can you buy your train ticket in advance at the STATION rather then online?

raethrop asked:

Okay, so this is probably a dumb question…but I wanted to know:)!

I want to ride the train from my hometown to Seattle, WA to visit some friends. If I order my ticket online, its $29.00. Thats fine. But then it costs $15.00 just to mail the little ticket to me!! I figured I would be able to just go down, and get it right at the station that the Amtrack stops in where I live and get it there a few days in advance to avoid that fee.

I’m guessing I can, but would like to double check. Thanks!

You can buy your ticket at the station just before you get on the train, but turn up early in case there’s a queue at the booking office. You should also be able to get the ticket a few days in advance.

Btw I can’t understand why it costs nearly half as much again to mail the ticket to you.

In the UK we have a system where if you book a ticket online, you are given a unique reference number. When you get to the station, you type your number into a machine and it prints the ticket for you. It doesn’t cost any more than if you bought it at the station.
