I am a local Shanghainese. Why take train to Changsha? A flight won’t cost you 1.5 hour to get there from Shanghai. But the train is gonna take you around 14~16 hours and the railway service is not what you will have in the western countries. Plus, it’s not cheap, and not easy for you to buy tickets if you don’t speak Chinese.
Being a foreigner, you can move in China(except Tibet, Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao, where may require special ‘visas’) freely as long as you don’t have language problem. In those major cities, like Shanghai, Changsha, Beijing, Chongqing, Wuhan…, you can always meet Chinese who speak English, not very native but mostly ok, in the airports and 3-star-above hotels. The government is trying to fix the oversea tourists into their “routes” but not so successful in cities like Shanghai, Beijing, where some ten thousands foreigners stay.
you can travel freely in mainland China
By the way, I’m in Changsha, if you need any help, feel free to let me know~
